2nd time back and there will definitely be a third! If you haven’t heard of MALA TANG, I can’t say you’re missing out but honestly…you definitely are.
Mala Tang is basically comprised of MALA=lots of pepper and chilli powder and TANG=soup. It originated in 四川 Sichuan which is most known in China for spicy dishes. Luckily at this place, you get to choose your own spice levels. So far, I’ve always gotten their mild spicy (the very bottom) and I’m going to slowly work my way up the next time I go!
I first had 麻辣烫 at Burwood and the overall atmosphere just surprised me. It was so funky to see the open fridge filled with different types of ingredients: meat, tofu, vegetables, fish balls, mushrooms, noodles, etc.
You just basically grab a huge clear bowl and tongs to pick out the ingredients you want. Once you’ve added your ingredients, you then go to the cashier in which they weight the bowl and you pay. They cook the ingredients and add in the broth. All you have to do is tell them the spice level and whether you want to add any condiments like sugar, vinegar, soy sauce, etc. (I add all!)
EASY!
