It is execution day for Yan Xun as we see performers and soldiers preparing for this grave affair. Honestly, this is the first drama I’ve seen where there are performances about execution. Given that they are wearing a white mask, it is intriguing as we would usually I would see people crying or shouting at the person.
Everyone is present at the execution ground and then we get a close shot of Yuwen Yue walking towards Chu Qiao and Yan Xun.
Yuwen Huai then reads out the Emperor’s decree which decides the fate of Yan Xun. Even though it said that Yan Xun did not participate in the rebellion against the Emperor unlike his father and family members, he was still punished cruelly. He was ordered to identify his family or else.
Then the soldiers brought out gold boxes – each filled with the head of one of his family members. Yan Xun looks at the soldiers angrily – poor him! IT would definitely suck to be given this type of ‘punishment’ in order to escape death! They’re his family!
Yuwen Huai promptly comes in to taunt Yan Xun that he’s the best person for the job since he would know who’s head belongs to who. He tries to force Yan Xun to accept the decree while the other princes who were sitting down are laughing and smirking at the sight of him getting beat up.
Knowing that Yuwen Yue can’t bear to inflict such torture of Yan Xun, Yuwen Huai greedily goes up and says “I will do it”. He opens a box and brings out the head of Yan Xun’s father. Yan Xun, furious with grief, tries to escape his captors and fights with the soldiers. Yuwen Huai doesn’t even bat an eyelid as this gives him a great reason to kill Yan Xun, “If he doesn’t accept the decree then just kill him!”
Yan Xun bloodily fights his way up to the golden box which has his father’s head. But Yuwen Huai just has to make him even more pathetic by kicking Yan Xun back down.
Chu Qiao watches the scene angrily and proceeds to fight off the soldiers holding her down to save Yan Xun. But she quickly gets captured while the other soldier says, “It seems like he has died”. The other princes smirk at the news but too bad, he has not died! Angrily, Yuwen Huai orders the soldiers to shoot their arrows at him since Yan Xun has not obeyed the decree. – See! I told you! He was just looking for a reason to kill him.
Meanwhile, the Princess begs her mother to save Yan Xun. The mother remains unmoved because she knows that if she does, she risks the anger of the Emperor as well as her life, and her children. Knowing that her mother would not do anything, the Princess begs her brother but he remains still.
Even though he was shot by numerous arrows, Yan Xun still tries to make it up the stairs to his father. Seeing Yan Xun in such pitiful state, Yuwen Yue tries to persuade him to accept the decree or else he will die. Yuwen Yue then tries to order the soldiers that there is no need for Yan Xun to identify the heads, but Yuwen Huai argues against it (of course) and even uses Chu Qiao as leverage.
Then Yan Xun’s mother comes in saying, “I will do it (identify the heads)”. Yuwen Huai tries to stop her but she explains that she is the perfect person for it, “Those people are my husband, my son, my daughter, my family”. She is such a formidable lady who is able to make her stand against these egotistical bastards!
She desperately goes to her son, appalled at the state he is in. They have a heartful mother-son reunion. She then slowly walks up to the box where her husband’s head lies and doesn’t lose her calm when faced with it head on. She talks about her husband’s achievements which Yuwen Huai tries to stop her, “I told you to identify him, what is the point about talking all these”.
After she finished confirming that they have her husband’s head, Yuwen Huai then says that he can now kill Yan Xun.
Continuing on from where we left off, Yuwen Yue immediately tells off Yuwen Huai saying that it will be his death when the decree comes to save Yan Xun.
Yan Xun’s mother proceeds to identify the other heads. As she proudly lists their achievements, we see tears flowing down her eyes – she’s so strong! It was sad that her daughter got killed and she was pregnant!
She gives permission for Yuwen Yue to proceed with throwing the boxes into the fire pit. She then tries to comfort her son before killing herself. Yan Xun then climps up the stairs to see his dead mother’s body, “Everyone is gone, why do you even want to leave me as well?”. The mother then tells Yan Xun to stay alive and to not give up Yanbei and its people. After her last words, she passes away with a smile.
Just as the soldiers were getting ready to get rid of Yan Xun, the imperial decree arrives to pardon Yan Xun from the death sentence. But that is not really happy news as he just witnessed his mother death!
Everyone returns back to their quarters after that cruel situation. The Princess, overcome with grief for Yan Xun, lies on the floor as she couldn’t do anything to save him from such cruetly.
However, even though the event is over, the other Princes and Lords are still plotting to kill Yan Xun. Yuwen Yue gets informed of the plot who instructs his servant on what to do in order to protect Yan Xun.
Meanwhile, Chu Qiao is in a prison cell with Yan Xun who is lying on a makeshift bed. She looks after Yan Xun despite their limited resources.
Then we see that Master Luo, person in charge of the jail, has been assassinated by someone before we get a close shot of Yan Xun and Chu Qiao. A servant goes over to hand over food to them saying that Yan Xun should eat it first and then they will get medicine. But Chu Qiao knows its a trap when she sees blood stains on the servant’s clothes when he walked away. She immediately pours it on the ground. A while later, we see her watching a dead rat after it had eaten the porridge. That servant comes back, “It is such a shame, you guys could have died painlessly”. Chu Qiao cleverly tries to manipulate the servant with the Cloud and Wind decree which immediately peaks his interest. He tries to get the information out from her and asks for a deal. She surprised him when she said that she wants him to help her only flee from prison.
She gets close to him then quickly stabs him in the throat. He releases his weapon which allows Chu Qiao to gain it.
The last scene we get is Chu Qiao persuading Yan Xun to get up and fight this injustice. She motivates him to become conscious again.

OMG! What an ep! Even though it took like 40 minutes in ep 24 to identify Yan Xun’s father, we see the cruelty of Yuwen Huai and the other lords..
Ep 25 was a bit of drag..as with the previous eps. Honestly, I’m mainly watching this drama for Zhao Li Ying and Lin Geng Xin, if not for them…I would’ve stopped ages ago.
